Faculty of Environmental Science and Engineering has a long history of running academy. Its predecessor was the Department of Chemical Engineering of Kunming Institute of Technology, which was established in 1958. In 1978, the Ministry of metallurgy decided and approved by the former State Education Commission to change the major of Inorganic Engineering into the major of Environmental Monitoring and Environmental Governance, and the Chemical Engineering Department was renamed as the Department of Environmental Engineering. It was renamed Department of Environmental Engineering and Chemical Engineering in 1990 and Faculty of Environmental Science and Engineering in 1999. In 2002, the major of Renewable Resources Science and Technology was first set up in China. At present, the college has Departments of Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, and Renewable Resources Science and Technology.

Since 1958, the Faculty (Institute) has laid a solid foundation for the cultivation of a large number of excellent talents. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering has been developing rapidly, which has a profound impact on life science, medicine, chemical industry, mining, agriculture, energy and other fields closely related to human survival, and has provided historic opportunities and challenges for the construction and development of the college.

The college employs outstanding talents at home and abroad, and has made great progress in discipline construction, personnel training and scientific research. So far, the college has a complete talent training system of undergraduate, master, doctor and postdoctoral levels, as well as many young and middle-aged academic leaders and outstanding young teachers with innovative spirit and standing at the forefront of the discipline.

Over the past 60 years, the college has achieved fruitful results in personnel training, scientific research, social services, cultural heritage and innovation, international exchanges and cooperation. More than 8000 talents at all levels have been trained and transferred to the society. He has won a number of national awards, undertaken more than 1000 national, provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects, and spent 114 million yuan on scientific research in the past five years. The college constantly innovates and has the courage to change. It carries out reform and innovation in the personnel training mode, teaching training system, quality training and other aspects, and constantly explores the personnel training mode and ways of Higher Education under the new situation. At present, we have established a teaching staff with reasonable knowledge structure, age structure, educational background structure and academic relationship structure, as well as a high-level scientific research and academic exchange platform, which has laid a good development platform for the college's personnel training and scientific research. The college has established a stable and friendly cooperative relationship with many famous universities and scientific research institutions at home and abroad, covering undergraduates, postgraduates, teachers and other groups, involving joint training, scientific research project cooperation, academic exchanges and other levels.
