1.Introduction The environmental science major started as a major in environmental planning and management in 1994 and then became a separate degree recognized by Ministry of Education in 1998. At present, there are five second-level disciplines for doctorate degree granting and five second-level disciplines for master degree granting of environmental science, environmental ecology, environmental chemistry, environmental biology and the management and planning of resources environment majors. The special research directions mainly including “environmental soil science”, “restoration and rebuilding of degraded ecosystem” and “pollution control chemistry”. The environmental science major is intended to train students to study and discover the scientific rules behind environmental issues and to search for solutions to environmental problems. Because environmental issues are interdisciplinary, this major relies heavily on fundamental methods of chemistry, biology, and ecology. These methods are of essential importance in developing students’ skills capable of understanding and analyzing current environmental issues and in searching for solutions of pollution control. The major has 21 fulltime teachers – 4 professors, 3 doctoral supervisors, 7 associate professors, 15 master’s supervisors, of which 16 have doctorates, 1 new century excellent talents, 2 introducing overseas talent of Yunnan Province, 2 mid-teens academic and technical leader of Yunnan Province. Professional background including environmental soil science, environmental ecology, environmental biology, environmental chemistry, environmental engineering, environmental management, environmental law, environmental impact assessment and so on, has a reasonable teacher structure. 2 Program 2.1 Program Objective Students should: master the basic theories, knowledges, and technologies of environment science; be capable of doingscientific research, teaching, environmental protection and environmental management inscientific researchinstitution, colleges and universities, enterprises and institutions and administration department. 2.2 Employment Students with a major in Environmental Science should be qualified to work in enterprises and institutions of environment, resource and ecology, administration management department of environmental protection, scientific researchinstitution, design department, colleges and universities relative to environmental monitoring, environmental pollution prevention and control, environmental plan and management, environmental consulting, environmental rule, environmental investigation, environmental education, environmental production and technology development. 2.3 Standards The students of this major mainly to learn the basic theories and knowledge of environmental science, to be trained by the applying basic research, applying research and environmental management, to have a better scientific literacy and the ability of teaching, researching, development and management, to master the methods of environmental monitoring and environmental quality assessment, and also the basic ability of environmental programming. The standard for cultivating talent in this major is technology type, divided into basic standard and higher standard, the basic standard expected to meet the following standards: (1) Personal qualities having good moral and overall cultural qualities, being healthy physically and mentally, and comprehending the major issues and principles of environmental science; mastering a foreign language such that they can listen, speak, read, and write well, having basic scientific knowledge, mastering the basic theory and technology of environmental science, well understand of the development of national environmental protection, the utilization of natural resources, sustainable development, and the frontiers of environmental science, and being capable of obtaining information, writing articles, and participating in academic communication. mastering the scientific way of thinking, being creative, and being capable of doing research and solving scientific problems. (2) Capabilities Students must be capable of learning, applying, and creating through: self-study, professional working, social communication, using computers and other information technology; solving problems using current knowledge and thinking, doing experiments, engineering, and environmental management. the ability to think creatively, as well as develop, design and conduct experiments in their specialty. (3) Knowledge Students must demonstrate: mastery of a foreign language, computers applications, information collection, article searches, and scientific writing. knowledge of management, economics, law, sociology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, life science, and earth science. understanding of principles in engineering design, engineering methodology, electronics, and environmental engineering. knowledge of the basic principles of environmental chemistry, biology, microbiology, monitoring and assessment, management, and law. The higher standard expected to meet the following standards: with excellent ideological and moral quality, cultural quality, mental quality and professional quality. foreign language and mathematics basic knowledge should reach the requirement of the entrance of postgraduates. proficiency in the basic theory , knowledge and skill of environmental science, well understand of the forward position, applying prospects and the latest developments of environmental scientific theory. the innovation consciousness and ability should be outstanding, with the initial ability to develop the environmental science and technology independently; having outstanding ability to solve the problems with specialized knowledge. the main and specialized courses level of chemistry, introduction to environmental science, environmental chemistry, ecology/biology, the principle of environment engineering and environmental engineering should reach the requirement of further education. 2.4 Main Subjects Environmental Science 2.5 Main courses include Environmental Microbiology General Ecology Environmental Chemistry The Principle of Environment Engineering Planning and Management of Environment (dual language) Environmental Impact Assessment Environmental Monitoring Environmental Toxicology (dual language) Environmental Law Environmental Engineering 2.6 Required length of study The major can typically be completed within 4 years. However, the program is flexible enough to allow completion in 3-6 years depending on student specific needs. 2.7 Degree According to university regulations, all students in the major are given Bachelor of Science degrees. 3.
