Recently, Professor PAN Bo, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Science and Engineering (KUST), who received the 2017 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, became the first “Distinguished Young Scholar” at KUST.
National Science Fund for Distinguished Yong Scholars is established to support the young scholars who have made outstanding achievements in basic researches to independently choose research fields and conduct new researches thereon. Aiming at cultivating young scientific and technological talents and outstanding academic leaders who can enter the world’s frontier of science and technology, annually, 200 projects will be subsidized, each of which is subsidized with 3.5 million yuan for duration of 5 years, and the applicants should be under the age of 45.
This year there are altogether 198 applicants who are selected into the official list after intense competition. These scientists come from 95 research institutes including famous universities and Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is not easy for Professor PAN Bo to overcome numerous difficulties and become a Distinguished Young Scholar.

CHINA SCIENCE DAILY’s Report of PAN Bo (2012)
This is an ear of rapid development, rapid flow of fund, and rapid change of ideas, but not all the changes are as elegant as the stars and sunset in the sky. For humanity, environmental Protection is not only the necessity for survival but also a soul-purifier that is indispensable in the course of development.
Since entering Peking University for a doctoral degree in 1999, PAN Bo has paid attention to pollutants and environmental geochemical behavior thereof. In 2006, he entered the University of Massachusetts for post-doctoral researches and since then, he has expanded his research fields to Environmental Behavior and Risk of Anthropogenic Pollutants.
In the December of 2008, PAN Bo entered KUST to start his work in scientific researches, team building, teaching, talent-training and external exchange. At that time, PAN Bo’s experience was undoubtedly special, there being the “flow deficit” between talents going abroad and talents returning to China and the imbalance of discipline development between the western China and Eastern China.
In the May of 2009, PAN Bo took the lead in establishing KUST Environmental Soil Science Laboratory and assumed the post of director. He confessed that there were many obstacles in conducting basic researches in the southwestern region of China, and sent his gratitude to ZHOU Rong, the President of KUST for his support to the construction of this college-level laboratory. In the December of 2010, the laboratory was selected as KUST Key Laboratory and in 2011 Key Laboratory Base in Institutions of Higher Learning of Yunnan Province.
These basic researches enabled PAN Bo to win a series of awards including that of “New Century Excellent Talents Training Program” of the Ministry of Education, and then he was employed as the Deputy Editor of European Journal of Soil Science, which was a SCI journal in Agriculture and Forestry. PAN Bo also paid close attention to the international frontier of his research field. Geochemical Behavior and Risk Control of Heavy Metals and Organic Pollutants in Lateritic Plateau has always been a hot research theme with distinctive regional characteristics where there were strong ultraviolet radiation, various types of soil, high content of transitional metal in soil which made the environmental fate of pollutants here more complicated but simultaneously provided a resources source with regional characteristics. The innovation team led by PAN then conducted researches on this field.
Persistence, combined with a calm heart, made honor as his starting point. Firmly, he went down the road of scientific researches, further and further.
